Lua class instances?

Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas about this. I have a mod for Half-Life 2 in which users can program their own weapons using Lua. At the moment each weapon spawns it's own Lua instance and loads a script that defines some functions. So in the code it just calls MyLuaClass->RunFunction( "onReload" ); etc.. Is there a way to do this without spawning a seperate Lua instance? Multiple players with multiple weapons in the same Lua instance as everything else? Any input is appreciated.
