Definitely design 1: it seems less.. ehm... tabular and rectangular, and just feels right.

Only thing: I think I'd crank the lightness of the body text up a notch to get some more contrast between the background and the text.

I like design 2 better but I think that the fonts on both of them are too small.

Design 1. But, I guess it depends on your target audience. The first one look much more elite-ish.

Design 1 is more creative and visually appealing. Design 2 is more readable and functional. It'd be great if you can have both with CSS. The best idea may be to add more of the style in design 1 into desgin 2 without losing the contrast or the better use of space. Design 2 definately uses space better which is one of the reasons why it is easier to read.

Both are nice but I like #2 for a business site better.
