I remember playing quake2 with software rendering. When you entered underwater the whole view was bended in wave like shape. When I played quake2 with hardware acceleration, that underwater effect was gone. So, can today's graphics hardware do this underwater effect?

If I remember the underwater effect correctly, you should be able to do the same thing by rendering to a texture, and then drawing that with some sort of warble effect.

yes, as hh10k, you can do a render to texture.

The reason Quake 2 could do it in software (and without much of a performance hit) was because you had direct access to the pixels, before they got drawn on screen, but in hardware modes, you don't.

I believe some (or all?) consoles, such as the PS2 and Xbox have direct access to framebuffer, however.
