Accessing materials in MaxScript

I was wondering if anybody could please explain to me how to access the diffuse color or the currently applied texture of a geometry node using maxscript, also how to read/write to data files (not text files). I actually posted this topic in the beginners section but people replied by telling me maxscript sucks and i shouldnt attempt a Map editor in it and rather use the SDK, although that seems like a good choice i would rather do this in MaxScript, so if anybody could help it would be much appreciated. thanx
