CreateSurface Error

My game would quit after it started running, so I narrowed the cause of the problem down to this code:
  
	// Create primary surface

	memset(&ddsd, 0, sizeof(ddsd));
	
	ddsd.dwSize = sizeof(ddsd);
	ddsd.dwFlags = DDSD_CAPS;
	ddsd.dwBackBufferCount = 1;
	ddsd.ddsCaps.dwCaps = DDSCAPS_PRIMARYSURFACE | DDSCAPS_COMPLEX | DDSCAPS_FLIP;

	DDError = lpdd4->CreateSurface(&ddsd, &lpddsprimary, NULL);
	if (DDError != DD_OK)
	{
		MessageBox(hwnd, "CreateSurface Error", "Error", MB_OK);

		return 1;
	}

  
I get the CreateSurface error. What should I look for? Should I change anything? Thanks a lot, you all are really helpful.

try this:

ddsd.dwFlags = DDSD_CAPS | DDSD_BACKBUFFERCOUNT;

since you have the

ddsd.dwBackBufferCount = 1;

there.
