I don''t think extensions are in the best interests for the software developer.

They work great for IHV''s. IHV''s want their product to be different, unique. Extensions enable them to extend the API in some way to allow them to show off these selling points.

In general, software developers do not want hardware to be different, they want it to be the same. By including functionality in the core API, making every IHV feel a need to implement it, homogenizes the different pieces of hardware.
