I think you'll have to use your gut instinct on this one: are you close enough to this guy, and is he reasonable enough to understand your plight? You could try approaching him as frankly and earnestly as possible, explain to him how you feel over the matter. The guy had his daughter when he was 18, and with any luck he can sympathize with your plight.
However, a potentially unbalanced ex-con with a possibly strict policy over his daughter might prove to be a less-than-reliable confidant.
