I'm helping code a game and want to know what formats are easiest to write loading functions for. I've already tried to use MS3D and I couldn't get the animations to work correctly.

.Obj is probably the easiest since it is only a text file of vertices, but you can't animate them. MD2 is also a popular and fairly easy to use format (that supports keyframes for animation). I think there is an article on gamedev about writing an MD2 loader. If you are looking for a good book on writing model loaders I reccomend "Focus on 3d Models". I can't think of the authors name at the moment, but it does a great job of covering the basics of some of the more popular file formats (.obj,MD2,3ds, etc).
