Game Ground Collision Question

I am making a game that is going to be kind of like Mega Man X (Rockman X whatever....), and I want the ground to go up and down and have hills and hav uneven ground. I am wondering if thiers an easier way to do the collision and gravity (so he can go up hills and he colides with uneven ground)than to textur map all the peices and make a collision rectangle around them and somehow for uneven shapes make polygons with weird sides for collision boxes (however the hell I would do that)? I will be using OpenGL and Glut. thanks greatly ~~Mad_Koder
