Determining camera obstructions?

So, here's my idea. I want to be able to create a circular cutout around my character to see through any camera obstrucions. I swear that one of the katamari games does this (maybe the second one?). All of my objects have bounding spheres and, unfortunately, none of them are necessarily static (by the nature of our game). Right now I'm using a frustum from the character center to my screen to determine what objects are obstructing view of my character. However, it catches really big objects too, like my ground plane, which have very large bounding spheres. The grand plan is to use objects that pass this frustum test and then use the stencil buffer to keep a clear circle around my character. Has anyone ever seen this done, and/or have any ideas on its implementation? Thanks :D
