Basic internet play question

Is it possible to reduce lag in an online game and if so, how? I mean if you have an online game and players are complaning of lag, is there a way to fix it?

Well, the most 'obvious' solution is: send less data. :) Either figure out how to reduce the amount of information you send over the network and do more calculations on the client's machine, or try some sort of compression (for example, send binary data instead of XML, which introduces a lot of extra overhead). I think that's about as much advice as one can give without more knowledge of your specific situation.
