Can Anyone Explain?

QUESTION Can anyone explain how transformation matrixs work for character animation? WHAT I THINK IS RIGHT (BUT PROBABLY ISN'T) What i've got so far is a pivot point skeleton, with a vertex/polygon skeleton/body over the top. I'm thinking that you use matrix transformations to move the pivot points and thus transform the polygon body. is this correct? am i completely off base?
