I have an idea for a free game, but I'm wondering what some of you might have done (or thought of) for generating even minimal revenue for freeware games. It's a small-scale online game idea that includes a lobby, so one thing I thought of is advertisements appearing in the game lobby (similar to what Battle.Net had/has). However, I can't think of anything else just to throw in the mix of ideas. Any suggestions are appreciated!

The best way to generate revenue is ask for donations and/or offering a not free sequel to your game, or an expansion pack.

You could make an MMORPG free to play, but make the economics work by selling game currency online for cold hard cash.

Yes, that's what we do (well, not currency but items and services).

Selling ad-space is the first thing that comes to mind. You could also do in-game advertising if suitable. Selling ad-space on your game's website is also an alternative.

If you have a strong user/fan-base, you could accept donations, or even sell merchandise (very easy via internet warehousing).

Or perhaps some sort of periodic, online raffle (with prizes).

edit:

p.s. paypal is/is-planning-to accept currency payments via SMS. I predict this will become very popular in the online gaming industry.
