how to use directdraw to change picture brightness

If you want to make the whole image brighter or darker you can do this by using the gamma controls:
Using DirectDraw's Gamma Controls to Perform a Fade

If you want to change the brightness of just one sprite there is no easy way in directdraw. You have to do it yourself:lock the surface read the rgb values, convert them to HSL, change the brightness, convert the new values back to rgb-space and write them to your surface (or a new one).

If you need a faster method you have to use direct3d or opengl.
