I suppose you could use GetDriveType.

Perhaps something like this will work well enough:

void Dummy(std::vector <char> & pResult, UINT uiDriveType = DRIVE_CDROM)
{
std::string pBuffer;

if(!pResult.empty())
pResult.clear();

for(char cIndex = 'a' ; cIndex <= 'z' ; cIndex ++)
{
pBuffer = cIndex;
pBuffer += ':';

if(GetDriveType(pBuffer.c_str()) == uiDriveType)
pResult.push_back(cIndex);
}
}

the cd rom.

(emphasis mine)

I have multiple cd/dvd drives on my system, which do you want?

GetDriveType is probably a good place to start.
