D3D Z-Buffer clipping

the z-buffer in D3D8 seems to me to be very limited. The clipping range is at, like, z = 100 or some other insane value! Any pushing this further back w/ out using the w-buffer? ----------------------------- Blue*Omega (Insert Witty Quote Here)
