model tangent calculations

I've wanted to add normal mapping into my engine for a LONG time now but I can't because I can't find any resources on the net to calculate the tangent and binormal (bitangant?) vectors on models other than spheres and planes, to eventually create the tangent space transformation matrix. Could somebody who has gotten this working please post a link to some help or post some code please? Thank you.
