Compile-time constant string CRCs

Recommended Posts

I was having some problems getting the compiler to do const string CRC calculations for me at compile time and I finally got it so I thought I'd share if anyone is interested. note - this builds a case-insensitive crc (remove the ToUpper to change that) note - I only tested this in visual studio 2003 .NET with full optimizations on. If anyone has improvements (especially a way to make the compiler do this in debug without enabling full optimizations for the entire project).
struct ConstCRC
	static const unsigned int s_CRC[256];

	__forceinline ConstCRC( const char * const str )
		_hash = 0;
		unsigned int len = strlen( str );
		for( unsigned int i = 0; i < len; ++i )
			char ch = ToUpper(str[i]);
			unsigned char b  = ch;
			_hash = ((_hash >> 8) & 0x00FFFFFF) ^ s_CRC[ unsigned int((_hash ^ b) & 0x000000FF) ];

	unsigned int _hash;

The crc table was calculated with the following code:
#define CRC32_POLY 0x04c11db7

unsigned int table[256];

for( unsigned int i = 0; i < 256; ++i )
	for( unsigned int c = i<<24, j = 8; j != 0; --j )
		table[i] = c = c & 0x80000000 ? (c << 1) ^ CRC32_POLY : (c << 1);

Usage is fairly straight forward.
ConstCRC hash( "Hello" );

It should be possible to do this using templates, but that sort of functional/template metaprogramming voodoo is something that takes more time and effort than I'd like to commit (and frankly I am not sure I can pull it off). Maybe someone else can jump in and write it up.

VC++ 2005 doesn't like toupper - it always generates a call. Haven't had any luck with writing custom inline versions of toupper - it inlines it, but it doesn't precompute the result. I haven't tried using a toupper version that uses a lookup table (I used a mathematical version); I'll try that when I have time.
