Maya (.MB) Scene Files

Does anyone know what the Maya Scene files structure is? or what it would take to be able to just pull the vertices and materials out of the Maya Files and load them into an vertex buffer and such in my Engine? And So everyone know's I would like not to have to write an Exporter or use DirectX's SDK Exporter.. Unless really nec. I will just continue to use the .X exporter thanks.
