I've seen them go as low as $2.95 for a .com domain. What is going on? Why is it so cheap now?

Because all the good ones have been taken. All thats left are the scraps.
In the good old days, they were free.

Don't know about all of them but i think it wasn't until about '95 that they started charging for domain names. I remember getting wasted a couple times in college around 94-95 and just collecting domain names. Even around '98 they were only $0.99 =)

ICANN controls the domain names, and allows Verisign to control most TLDs.

also, not all amazing domain names are taken, ie recently picked up cagedancemonkey.com
