Wanted to say hi from a new member!
Hi, Im new to the community and thought I would post a hello. Im a 31 year old gamer that recently decided to learn how to code the next great genre breaking game (note: when I say "next great genre breaking game" I define that as something I wont be totally embarrased to show anyone.) Im doing this largely because I couldnt talk anyone else into doing it for me. ;)
I could use some feedback on my idea and if its too much for a noob to undertake. My idea is a Turn Based Strategy war game. Where each side customizes and places his army of the field and then go back and forth fighting it out. I find that a problem I have with RTS or other TBS games is that over half the game is building up your army when what you want to do is get right to blowing stuff up. :) So just cut right to the chase. If any of you have played table top Warhammer, something akin to that, not a clone, but that gives an idea of my thinking. So what do you think? Remember I am pretty new to all this coding (I define "new" as beginner level, having coded only a few simply things)Am I being to ambitious? Just a dumb idea? or any other feedback is appreciated. ;)
I love the idea of using a pre-built army. I'm the 5-minute gamer with 0.01% spare time to game, and that would totally suit my lifestyle.
Have you ever played Dynasty Warriors 2 on PS2? That is a great game that took me years to beat, but let me focus on the hack n slash. Perfect. :)
There are so many helpful people here; I'm sure that you will find all of the answers that you're looking for. I have, and I've come up with some real doozies.

Quote:Original post by mattllowWelcome :-) As a fellow hobbyist, I'll try to give you some feedback. A lot of it depends on how much time you have to devote to it, and what sort of background you have. In any case, you should probably expect some number of months or even years before you have what might be considered a complete game. There are a lot of things you can do to cut that down though. Avail yourself of pre-existing libraries wherever possible, or even use a 'game creation' library if it's appropriate for the genre you're interested in. You'll probably get lots of feedback in this area, but you should definitely look into SDL+OpenGL as a cross-platform foundation for your projects; it will speed up development considerably. There are many other useful libraries available as well, for everything from file system management to networking to image loading.

I personaly enjoy the building of the army and the strategic placement that's involved. Without that, I'd feel that the game would no longer be a RTS/TBS. Instead it would be more of a RT/TB(?) game. I'm sure there are plenty of people that agree with me, and there are plenty of people that would agree with you, and some people that would stand somewhere in between. Either way, it's just my opinion.
Good Luck with your idea.

Well, first, hello and welcome to the community. You chose the right place, because the majority of the people in the community are very helpful. =)
Anyhow, there's nothing wrong with the way you're thinking. Even if you have only coded a few simple things. It's great to set goals for yourself.
But first, familiarize yourself really well with the language. I am assuming C/C++? =) Then, move on to something like the Win32 API. From there, you can use resources like NeHe (very nice! =D) for OpenGL. And you can find plenty of other resources in the Articles & Resources section of GDNet.
But make sure you REALLY have a good understanding of the language/environment you're using. Then, read up on design docs., game planning, etc. so you know what you want to do. Then, develop it! =)
That's my advice. I hope this helps. =)

Hey man welcome and good luck? So your just learning to code and your already wanting to make a game like that? Slow down!!! Maybe in a few years if you get a team together but you gotta learn how to code first. (if you dont already)
But good luck with your game and welcome

That the idea, get right to the action. I have done all the RTS and TBS out there and its the combat that I really enjoy. So let me customize my army then just jump right into it.
Falling Sky = Yes I know im very impatient :( What will likely happen is that I will struggle for a few weeks and get nowhere then take your advise. ;)
TFS_Waldo = Thanks for the links! and the advise.
Anonymous Poster = To each their own. I like a good RTS as well, just been played out IMHO
jyk = Thanks for the welcome! The community does seem to be great overall. Everyone seems very helpful.

I wholehartedly disagree with the AP. If I am understanding the OP correct, then you do create your army, but thats all done at the start of the game. So you really have to think of the 'big picture' and 'plan ahead.' This is the difference between strategy and tactics, so I definately think that this type of game requires planning and strategy.
Welcome to the board and best of luck making your game!
PS. If you're using C++ SDL is a great way to do your graphics, player input, and sound.

Ezbez = yup you are correct, you still choose your army, configure it the way you want to etc. Place it, but once the game starts, its all done. No cranking out 1 unit at a time, start with your whole army that you picked. IE I want more melee guys, or I want more ranged support. You configure your army its just not a race to do it. You start with your army and get right to the combat. Also thanks for the suggestion, ill look at it.
