NT OpenGL Cards

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have just finished my OpenGL App and need to deploy it on our computer network. However, all the machines have useless 4MB cards in them, so I need to upgrade the lot ( about 30 machines). Can anyone recommend a good OpenGL graphics card ( for WinNT) costing about $150 each ? Thanks for any help. P.

GeForce 2 MXs are very good for the price.

For $150, you can get almost any card you want, and at 30, I am sure you can get a pretty good discount.

For NT 4, ATI Rage128/PRO (32MB under $80) or Radeon (32MB/64MB $120+) all work good with openGL, Nvidia TNT2(32MB under $60), Geforce 1 (32MB about $100), Geforce 2 GTS/ULTRA (32MB/64MB, but out of your price range, I think around 170+), Geforce 2 MX (32MB, under $130).

The Rage 128 Pro, and TNT2, are really old cards (more than a year old), drivers have had time to mature, but don''t expect any updates. Geforce 1 is about a year old also, Faster than the others mentioned so far, stable drivers for the most part. Geforce 2 GTS/ULTRA current top of the line, fastest cards so far, untill the next card comes (in about 8 weeks). Geforce 2 MX is a cut down version of the Geforce 2 GTS, it does the job, and is faster than Rage 128/Pro & tnt2, but not as fast as a radeon, or a Geforce 1, but it has more features than the others also.

I dropped NT4, about 6 months ago, and at that time I used a Rage 128, and it worked well. With NT5 (win2k), I have used both a Rage 128, and a Geforce 2 MX, and I prefer the Geforce 2 MX.

I would search deja.com for what people are using with NT4, since I don''t know the driver stability/problems with the above mentioned cards. I do know to stay away from Kyro, and 3dfx, and S3, they all either have bad drivers (S3), or the company is going belly up (3dfx).

Matrox sucks. Well, at least in the opengl area. I think they are even worse than S3. It took them a _LONG_ time to get any openGL drivers, and those mainly work OK for Q3 and stuff based off that engine. I haven''t looked into their latest drivers though, they could have improved, but I really doubt it.

Matrox does have good "2D" clarity though.
