Display lists - glGenLists(?)

i had a question about specifically glGenLists(). for example if you have GLuint mylist = glGenLists(1); will mylist always = 1? has anyone experienced glGenLists not returning a number other than 1? me and a co-worker were talking about what happens when you want to create multiple display lists. if you have multiple ones you will notice that the value of mylist would be 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21..etc etc. what happens if you only have one display list and a 1 is not returned? does this ever happen? just trying to think deeper thats all.

the list ID is just a unique number to identigfy the list
eg both the following will work

GLuint mylist = glGenLists(1);
or
GLuint mylist = 34545;

glGenLists(1); just returns a umber u havent used before
