what library to use for pong/tetris/breakout?

i notice there is allegro. is sdl similiar to what allegro does? these libraries are so one doesnt have to "reinvent the wheel"? like calls to display, move character, play sound, etc...?

SDL and ALlegro are both APIs well-suited towards basic games. It makes programming games much easier by giving you an interface to work with that eliminates the need to deal with lower-level details.

Either one should work fine for pong and the such, but from what I've seen SDL is prefered over Alegro.
