im just wondering if anyone knows what ratio (1:1 or 45degrees) etc that starcraft/warcraft3 or the diablo series uses

Diablo uses 1:2 ratio, starcraft too :) ex: 64 pixels wide 32 pixels high
Most games use 1:2 or ~26.6°, I think. It is just a convenient relation e.g. for hand painted graphics, since it is nicely pixel aligned. 45° shows also a nice pixel pattern, and may be better suited for strategy games due to its more "look from above". The 26.6° instead allow a more human oriented looking.

Btw, to be correct, these are not isometric but dimetric relation. There is only 1 relation that is actually isometric, namely 30° (okay, there are in sum 8 directions that produce isometric views).
so is that like:

                                     .<-camera here                        /|                       / |                      /  |A                     /   |                    /____|          object ->.  B

so 1:2 is it A:B or B:A

edit lol this looks better when im typing it.

but i guess im asking is it height,horzontal distance or vice versa

1:2 :: A:B

If you look at the diagram, the angle is between OB and OC. So A = sin(theta) and B = cos(theta).

It ends up being the solution to the equation cos(theta) - 2*sin(theta) = 0
