I know there's a guide for beginners game programming but i have limited budget so can someone please advise me what book to buy and read to be able to UNDERSTAND and KNOW THE FUNCTIONS of DirectX api. i won't like books that just goes: here you go, use this library and make your game. what i can do now: I can program C/C++ pretty well, understand classes but have no idea how to use STL. read the book Tricks of the windows game programming gurus (the green one) and understood 70-80% of it. i also own: programming role playing games and multiplayer game programming both in the game development series, but havn't read them yet. i have read the review of Tricks of the windows game programming gurus and they say the author's style of coding is old and should never be used. so what is a good book with a 'good' style of coding that i should adopt? thanks.

these two books are pretty good:
one's general and the other's on shaders

neither book is, "here... watch me as I use my DirectX wrapper."
