Converting models
I've used MilkShape3D models in games that I've made. Now I have a really good artist making a model for me but it will be in .3ds (3ds max 6) format. My MilkShape trial expired so I can't import/export. MilkShape doesn't even support importing .3ds . Does anyone know of a way to convert a .3ds file into .ms3d ?
My advice would be to buy milkshape. There is a 3ds import plugin for it. Or switch to a free tool with 3ds support.
MilkShape DOES SUPPORT .3DS IMPORT/EXPORT but it DOES NOT SUPPORT .MAX. That are two different file formats! .3DS stands for Autodesk 3D Studio 4 (DOS) and .MAX stands for Discreet (Autodesk) 3D Studio Max (Windows). It is possible to export a 3ds file from 3dsmax, but it is not possible to import a .max file in 3D Studio 4 for DOS.
MilkShape can read .3DS files (you need to export from MAX), just take a closer look at the import features.

Milkshape is well worth the twenty dollars you'd pay for it. You get unlimited free upgrades and plugins are easy to write for it in C++.
