OpenGL opengl terrain picking

I'm looking for a technique to select units that are placed on my terrain and then, with a right click, send them a command to go to a location on the terrain. My thoughts were to extend a ray from the 2d location of the cursor and see if it hits any of the polygons, but i don't know how to go about doing this. I believe its called picking?
