help understanding glMultiDrawArrays()

Can anyone help to clarify glMultiDrawArrays() which I don't exactly understand. I'm wondering if it'll help me to draw many smaller vertex arrays instead of one big vertex array where I'd normally use glDrawArrays(). I want to break this one big vertex array I have down into hundreds of smaller vertex arrays so that I can call glLoadName() (and do picking on them) for each element I draw and do it somehow efficently fast so I was wondering about glMutliDrawArrays(). I may be totally off here and maybe this has something to do w/ the 7 arrays where you have to enable client state for, but I don't know. I look at the opengl refs and I don't understand what primcount means either. Any help much appreciated.
