Hey all. I was wondering what image format would you recommend for rendering 2d images and why. I noticed alot of people using tga instead of jpgs etc. What are the benefits? Thanks.

jpeg is a lossy compression format, meaning that you might lose a lot of information in your image, high frequencies in the image might be modified, and so on. Moreover, the jpeg format is using only 3 channels - meaning that you can't set up an alpha channel using the jpeg format.

tga, on the other end, is a lossless file format and can contain a fourth channel, meaning that you'll be able to set up an alpha channel directly in your image. Moreover, there is an uncompressed version of the tga file format that makes it really easy to read.

HTH,
