how to correctly texture map a sphere?

i used gluSphere to create a sphere at (0,0,0,0). now, i want to apply a texture image to it. i used the normal way to create a texture (glbind, gl gen etc), with gluQadricTexture. but when i run the application, the texture starts at the center of the sphere instead of at the bottom, and rotating the sphere makes the texture stationary, while the sphere itself is spinnig. how can i fix this?
