Jumping Animation

I have some frames for jumping but I was wondering how to set it up. I have the frames for jumping up, being in the air, and coming back down. I'm thinking the animations should be triggered depending on whether or not the character is moving up in the air or down. I don't know.... I'm confused.

You say you have separate animations for jumping up and down? If yes, then triggering them will be fine. Just play the down animation when the character is on his way down, and the up, up. Obviously don't forget to play a landing animation or an idle animation when the character hits the floor etc... I'm assuming here that you know when your character is jumping up and down and hits the floor, mind.
I agree. Simply link your vertical velocity with the appropriate animation.
... as opposed to "air time". Because the player may hit a ceiling or enemy and make a "premature return to earth". You might also have variable-heighth jumping (like depending on how long the jump button is pressed)
