small hash function

Hi. Do any of you have suggestions for a fast, hopefully simple hash function which compresses short (typically <100 bytes) ASCII strings into an arbitrary n-length byte array? It doesn't have to by cryptographically strong but it does have to distribute the input strings evenly.

Hashes aren't supposed to be of varying length, they should all be the same, regardless of the input data length. If the hash lengths are as long as your varying input data length then you're performing encryption, not hashing.

That said, I've learnt that CRC functions double extremely well as hash functions.
