can gpu be used to calculate floats and matrices rather than render?

hello guys, since the shader languages provide a fast way of calculating vectors and matrices, i'm just wondering is there any people who use shader language, say cg, to solve mathematics. if the gpu can be used to handle this kind of calculation, then how should i get the result returned by the shader language?
