Geometry: Volumes, Areas and ...?
Hi!
I'm working on a geometrical library (things like bounding box/sphere determination, random point on surface, intersection queries, and so on). So far I've covered line segments, rays, lines, oriented rectangles, axis aligned rectangles, triangles, circles, planes, oriented boxes, axis aligned boxes and spheres.
I'd like to classify my objects depending on the number of dimensions they've got, like this:
Volumes
o Sphere
o Box
o AxisAlignedBox
Areas
o Circle
o Rectangle
o Triangle
???
o Segment
o Ray
o Line
And there's the problem: What would you classify line segments, rays and (infinite) lines under?
For me, "range" and "reach" seemed like good ideas, because they indicate that the objects only have a length. But a friend of mine who's got a doctoral level in physics insists this name isn't right. He recommends the terms "wire" or "hairline" which do not sound right to me at all.
What would you math guys here recommend?
If you really want to be pedantic then a 2D shape such as a circle isn't an area in the same way a line isn't a range. I honestly don't see the need to classify them any more than 'geometry', but if you reall feel the need just pick something that makes sense rather than worrying about being strictly correct.
