I call D3DXLoadSurfaceFromSurface() in my own computer(ATI 9000) and it succeeds. But when the app runs in another old-hardware computer(815+ATI7000),it fails. Does D3DXLoadSurfaceFromSurface() need hardware support? thank you

The format (D3DFORMAT) of the surface you're loading to/from needs to be supported by the device you're using - if it isn't, then that's one reason you might get an error.

If the surface formats are different (i.e. you want a colour/format conversion), there's a chance it will use IDirect3DDevice9::StretchRect() in its implementation - if that is the case, then take a look at the documentation for StretchRect() to see the restrictions.

Try linking with d3dx9d.lib instead of d3dx9.lib - the debug output on the second computer will tell you why the call failed.
