effect of opening eyes?

The only way I can think of is to have two quads, top and bottom, and move them up/down accordingly. There is more than likely a much better method. But that's the only thing I can think of. Have you tried that? =)

You could try looking in to stencil buffering - draw some ovals of increasing y-radius onto the stencil buffer so that only bits of your scene that were within that region got rendered

This combined with a strong blur post-process should do the trick. Also, don't suddenly turn the blur off once the eyes are open but gradually decrease the amount of blur as the eyes are openning so that there is still a little blur for about 1/4 of a second after the eyes are fully open.
