Suggestions Sought -- External Control Mesh

Hello All. I need to devise an external control mesh that will house my object. Currently, I am doing this by constructing lines parallel to each of the face and then finding the where do these lines cut each other.Once I get the point of intersections then they will form the vertices of my mesh. All this is done through mouse intraction.i.e rendering lines on cliking. Will the above approach is easy or there is some efficient method of meeting the task. I am new and could think of this approach as the best. Suggestions in this regard are highly welcome.Also thans for your time.
