Damage question...

In various games when you shoot with a weapon for instance a tank you only see one type of damage made ot it with the use of decals. What i really want to know is how to make the damage model depending on the weapon used. For example: we hit a tank with a gun and the bullet deflects, wuth a more powerful gun the bullet deflects but we can see a dent in the armor, with an armor piercing bullet we can see a hole etc. This has to do with physics or I can get away with with plain graphics programming?

have more than one kind of decal, one for each type of weapon effect.

Make something like a Bullet class and subclass that for the different types of bullets in the game. Each subclass then has its own decal.
