I just finished "Beginning C++ Game Programming" by hudson and i purchased "Game Coding Complete v2" by Mcschaffry thinking it would be a nice transition, but still a lot of the material is over my head. Any suggestions?

I just got "Game Programming All in One, 2E" by Jonathan Harbour after reading "Beginning C++ Game Programming". It uses the Allegro game library to get you started quickly which I really liked. Most other introductory game programming books will spend a lot of time covering Windows programming and setting up DirectX, but this book is right to the point and you will have a very simple game running by Chapter 4.

Before moving onto the next book, consider making some simple games / animations of your own which use what you have learnt and techniques you can use having learnt something about DirectX.

This would give you a clear indication of how much DirectX you can do.
