Do I need Direct Input?

Because it is much faster. Once you wrote a iderctInput class handling the keys and mouse events it is easier to use

DirectInput suffers from the same hardware limitation as any other key reading procedures. The limitation is in some keyboards and DirectInput can do nothing about that.

Compare NeHe OpenGL tutorials 10 and 23 for almost identical programs using different input procedures.

You can do a lot more with DirectInput but for simple keyboard input does it really not matter.
