Ok, I have VS2005 and the DirectX SDK. I just want to start with something simple - I want to create a window which I can draw to, create an overlay I guess. I'd like to know some of the basic functions, if possible: set pixel, draw line / circle, etc. I'm sort of odd. I understand the C++ language well (functions, classes, templates, operators, etc.), but I know very little about the standard libraries. I should be quick to learn though.

evil steve has some nice tutorials about setting up and rendering in direct3D

There is some tutorials here at GD as well.

Rendering pixels and lines in DirectX is probably harder than loading and rendering a complete textured mesh. Specially now that direct draw is not supported anymore. (Im using DirectX SDK 10 and VC++ 2005 express, and Direct Draw dont seem to work at all anymore)

There is also a totorial on rendering 2d lines at flipcode that looks ok

If you find programming DirectX a pain in the butt, you should take a look at SDL
