Retrieving Texture Data From Bound Unit

In my program I can easily load bitmaps and then bind them as textures no problems. Obv within the loading subroutine is this: glBindTexture glTexture2D, gaModelTextures(texNo) where gaModelTextures(texNo) is the currently loaded bitmap to be bound. However, what happens when i want to retrieve the image data from the texture unit? Say I've got texture0 but i want to put the data back into an array so that I can manipulate it myself? Any ideas would be much appreciated BTW programming in Visual Basic 6
