Detail Textures...?

I have a question about Detail textures. Specifically, what are tehy and how to implement w/ 1 TMU. Are they just a greyscale image? How would I blend it onto the existing textured poly if I only have 1 TMU? As usual, any help/code/links would be much appreciated. Sorry, no code for you. I used a greyscale texture for mine, but I guess you could have used a color one too. With 1 TMU you would have to do two passes. One for the main texture, and then a blended one for the detail. This sucks because then you have to do the whole geometry pipeline twice and it kills performance.
