monitoring gpu ram

hello, is there a way or a tool to monitor the current size of the graphic card's RAM? using this, i could know when to dispose unneeded texture objects from the card. thanks!

What API?

If you're using Direct3D, then the managed pool already does this for you. The only function availiable is IDirect3DDevice9::GetAvailiableTextureMem(), but that returns AGP memory too, and isn't usually too accurate.
The best bet is to only remove resources from VRAM when you get a D3DERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY error, which is what D3D does.
