Diagonal tiles?

I was about to make tile engine of sorts. To create my own map and I wanted to find a bunch of files. So i extracted all the files from a game. And all the tiles are like this http://nstark.com/tile.bmp Why are the tiles diagonal I would think that would make everything much more complicated and what does it accomplish? I am mainly just curious as to why they did that? I would still like to use these tiles but I think the whole diagnal thing is confusing me. I could rotate some of them myself but not all. Thanks :-)

You want to check the isometric forum for info about that type of tile. Those are the same proportion as the tiles in Ultima Online.

The reason they are angled is it lets you get a 3d look using 2d graphics.

Thanks a lot for the help!

I read a little bit about the Isometric maps/engine. I think at my stage i should probably stick to a regular tile map. Although I was curious as to if it is easy to convert a simple tile based engine to a isometric. After I get some practice under my belt?

I will ask on the isometric forums also.
