I'm trying to make a fighting-game. I've been racking my brain trying to make the whole thing run as smoothly as can be expected, when something hit me: why make a function to load character-data when I can just make a py-file with all of the character's effects in it? It would allow me to make whatever kind of parameter I'd want. for whatever aspect I'd want; and all I would need to do for the main file is give is character's class the same function-names. Is there a speed/size-drawback to this; and is it less than the advantage of flexibility and ease? Because I'm still new at this, I have to ask: am I making ANY sense, here?

All of your loading should be done before gameplay actually occurs. Doing this will save you some processing power for the game to run more smoothly. People generally don't mind longer loading times.
