Direct Draw 8 & bitmaps

I was wondering how one would go about loading bitmaps in DX8... I know normally I could use the DDCopyBitmap and the DDLoadBitmap functions to do this but they don''t seem to be availiable (or they''ve been moved..) in the DX8 ddutil.cpp file. Could anyone shed some light on this, I''d greatly appreciate it .

1) load the bitmap yourself, or use some sort of library;
2) use D3DXCreateTextureFromFile() from the Direct3DX library.
