Shape Lines (Bezier, etc)

Hi, I am looking for an efficient way to draw shape lines (B-spline or Hermite), and I want to be able to edit the control points while the application is running. I am thinking of using index/vertex buffers but I am worried that it might get heavy, like was written in Microsoft DirectX newsgroup. I am wondering if there are any ways to make it more efficient? I thought of using vertex shader but since I need the values of the curve to perform other things, I am afraid that is a little bit impossible. I am wondering if someone has had the same problem before and could point me how to best overcome this problem? Sindharta T.
