detail texture

Hi everyone, I''m currently busy creating a landscape renderer using a quadtree. It uses a few textures, one for grass, one for snow, one for rocks, etc, but it looks pretty ugly. I''ve heard some things about lightmaps and detail textures which should improve the quality. I''ve found out what a lightmap is, and i''m going to code that in a while, but first i want to know what a detail texture is, and what it''s used for. Any help is really appreciated. Thanks Diablo
